Video Games - Sony Gamer's Day 2007 Coverage

Yes, I know I'm a couple days late on posting this, but there was sooo much to cover I took a few days to rethink what I was going to post and wait for higher quality videos to roll in. Initially I was going to make a new post for every game and post virtually every video I found, but I re-thought that idea and decided to make one big post wrapping up what games I felt were the best/most important.

Sony's Spring Gamer's Day was held in San Diego a few days ago and a total of 54 games were announced for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, almost all being scheduled for a fall/winter release. I was bombarded with trailers, interviews, demonstrations, and all kinds of gameplay videos from some truly amazing games Sony has coming out very shortly, some of which I had never heard of before and am completely blown away by. That hefty price tag of the PS3 is going to be justified very soon as these games start rolling in; I know I am extremely excited for these titles, as well as the titles coming in 2008 that were not talked about, like FFXIII, MGS4, White Knight Story, the multi-platform games, and even Ninja Gaiden Sigma which is due out very soon. Things seem to be looking up for Sony and I feel they have the brightest future out of all the consoles.

Here's a quick rundown of some major announcements thanks to Destructoid:

• Sony will release SOCOM Confrontation as a multiplayer-only title for the PlayStation 3. It will support up to 32 players online with full clan support, etc.
• Sony is developing a bowling title that uses the SIXAXIS -- much like Wii bowling.
• Nearly all major first-party titles will be coming out in the fall.
• A Warhawk public beta will begin on May 25 with sign-ups available now.
Warhawk will be available to download over the PlayStation Network but will also be available at retail on Blu-ray. The retail package of Warhawk will include the game with extras such as developer interviews and demos. The pack will also include a Bluetooth headset for the PS3.
• The PS3 version of Stranglehold will include the original movie, Hard Boiled.
• A Resistance: Fall of Man add-on pack with two maps will come this fall; More MotorStorm content will also be on the way.
LittleBigPlanet will have a demo released this fall with a planned final release for just after Christmas.
• There are more than 90 titles coming to the PS3 from 3rd-party developers this year, with half being for the PlayStation Network.
• Peter Dille, Senior VP Marketing for Sony, said that Devil May Cry 4 was developed for the PlayStation 3 and is being ported down to other formats.
• PSP hardware sales are up 40%, with software sales up 150%. There will be 140 PSP games coming out this year with nine being 1st-party exclusives.

Now onto the individual games. I know it seems like a lot, but A LOT of media was released between May 17 and today. Everything I post is only what I feel is the absolute best and must-watch videos, keep that in mind. So enjoy the following media and info on some truly incredible upcoming PS3 games:

Pain:
This downloadable PS3 game is set in a destructable downtown. In the game, you launch a guy on big rubber band, and get points by smashing into stuff. Pain features ragdoll physics and gameplay reminds me of Crash Mode featured in the Burnout games, which is definitely not a bad thing.

There was some demonstration videos floating around explaining more in detail, but they weren't that great quality so I won't post them. This game looks very, very fun, addictive, and should come at a cheap price for a downloadable game.

OVERVIEW
The concept of PAIN was derived from an extensive teen market research report. The findings of the report indicated that comedy, random chaos, creativity, community and competition were the central figures driving entertainment choices for the teen audience.

PAIN is much more than a game, it's actually a creative, user-driven comedic experience that presents players with the unique opportunity to control and capture the irreverent style of humor found in television shows such as Jackass or Viva La Bam. The game boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming... comedy. Many games and products have allowed players to experience scripted, comedic scenes, but none have successfully allowed the end-user to actually be the architect of these situations... until now.

One thing is certain; gamers have never seen anything quite like PAIN...

The core, unique mechanic of the game allows the player to load a character into an extreme launching device, such as a human-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. The player receives points by stringing together painful collisions and inducing chaos in the environment. The player must achieve a wide variety of goals and / or reach various scoring milestones in each of the different modes of play.

Available exclusively via download on the PLAYSTATION®Network for the
PLAYSTATION ®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system, PAIN will feature a robust online community where players will be able to upload and share their comedic experiences; while other users can rank and comment on the content shared within the community.

KEY FEATURES
Based on a teen research report indicating that chaos, comedy, creativity, and community are central themes to their entertainment choices, PAIN is the first game of its kind that allows the gamer to be the architect of theses comedic episodes.
Multiple playable characters each with a very unique personality and attributes as well as character specific in-flight poses.
Dozens of ways to play - over 9 different ways to play single player alone, including modes like Spank the Monkey and Mime Toss. With multiplayer modes like HORSE and online competition, PAIN provides both the challenges and the replayability gamers are searching for.
Completely Interactive Gameplay Environment - regardless of what the player does within the PAIN thematic, the overall environment remains completely dynamic and fully destructible, waiting for the player to find new ways to create chaos, comedy or simply wait to see what happens next.
Each time a player launches into the PAINful environment, the physics and animation data is stored on PS3's HDD allowing the player to view a replay instantly. With control over various camera angles and the replay speed - slow motion and fast forward - users can edit and re-record each bruising launch.
Unique physics model created on Havok powered events, allow for amazing ragdoll animations, while insuring that duplicating incidents is almost impossible. Keeping gameplay fresh over and over no matter how many times a player is launched into the same environment.
Available exclusively via the PLAYSTATION®Network, PAIN will have a robust online community feature set that will include: head-to- head and cooperative gameplay, leaderboards, the ability to upload and download user generated replays, and contests.
With PAIN's modular backbone, the game is made to expand. More characters, more themes, more gameplay modes and most importantly more PAINful fun!

Folklore:
It's an adventure/role-playing game with an innovative combat system where your attack is to spawn mythical creatures who do battle.

OVERVIEW
Developed by Tokyo's Game Republic under legendary game creator Yoshiki Okamoto, executive producer for Onimusha™, Devil May Cry™ and Resident Evil™, Folklore™ is a unique, dark fantasy adventure inspired by western fairy tales and built to showcase the power of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Set in the mysterious town of Doolin, two strangers, Keats and Ellen, are drawn together to uncover a mysterious legend in a remote village that exists on the border between dreams and reality. They soon learn that the town serves as a gateway to fantastic realms, full of creatures, spirits and monsters. In order to solve the mystery of the town, and their past, the pair must journey through these worlds to uncover its secrets.

STORY OVERVIEW
Despite being a realist, Keats unhappily finds himself a journalist for a third rate occult magazine. One day Keats receives a phone call from a woman asking for his help.
Through the static Keats hears the word "Doolin". Sensing something wrong, Keats rushes to the village, but the woman he believes to have called him, is found murdered. He stays on to find out more about this murder. Strange events follow that night, and he travels to the "Netherworld".

Having lost her mother as a young child, Ellen is prone to dreaming and tends to look away from reality. Strangely, she spends her holidays actively searching England's countryside for folk stories. She is not so good with people but seems to have a rapport with children and the elderly. One day Ellen receives a letter from the mother she lost as a child, the message proposing a meeting in Doolin. She finds herself in the village at the same time as Keats. Here they wander between "reality" and the 7 Netherworlds, in search of the end to their stories.

KEY FEATURES
• Journey to seven incredibly vibrant realms, all uniquely designed and tailored to fit their distinct personalities. From the ruins of the Undersea City to the never-ending maze of the Endless Corridor, each destination is different from the next.
• Inspired by western fairy tales, players interact with or clash against a cast of over 100 originally designed creatures, characters and monsters.
• Using the SIXAXIS™ wirelsess controller, the player must battle monsters and literally "shake" them into submission and "yank" their powers from them. The absorbed powers will be used to capture or defeat the monsters that lie ahead.
• Begin the game as either Keats or Ellen and learn their story and gameplay style. Keats uses traditional direct attacks while Ellen uses strategic methods to trap her enemies. Decisions made in one story line will directly impact the story path of the other.

Heavenly Sword:
"Obviously an attempt to re-create the God of War magic, which is not a bad thing. It's a really intense hack and slash. It's built around melee combat. You go from huge boss battles to fighting literally 1,000s of enemies. The setting has a vaguely Asian feel to it, and the main character is a female. Very, very cool game."

This game looks absolutely gorgeous. Be sure to click here to check out tons of other videos from this game, including an Onstage Demonstration and a direct feed of the full demo played at Gamer's Day '07. I've been looking forward to this title for a while now, and all these new videos are getting me even more pumped.

OVERVIEW
Emotionally charged, stunningly beautiful, and delivering unprecedented dramatic character performance, Heavenly Sword™ showcases the power of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. A dramatic tale of revenge sees Nariko, a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army. The story builds around the ancient Heavenly Sword, which once belonged to a powerful deity. It can never be wielded by a mortal without it slowly but inevitably draining their life-force.

When the invading King (played by Andy Serkis) destroys the warrior clan that guards the Heavenly Sword, the clan leader’s daughter, Nariko, takes up the sword in a desperate fight for survival. Nariko must now pay the ultimate price as she embarks on one last mission of vengeance against the King and his army before her life is finally and irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword…

Andy Serkis, the world’s leading CG actor, famous for his roles as Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” and Kong in “King Kong,” was heavily involved in the creative process. As well as starring in Heavenly Sword as the villain, King Botan, Andy was a major contributor to the character development, writing, casting, directing and performance capture for the PS3 title.

Heavenly Sword features a deep, diverse combat experience made possible only on PS3.

KEY FEATURES
The Heavenly Sword – The Heavenly Sword itself can transform into three distinct weapons, each with its own accompanying fighting stance used by Nariko to vary combat styles.
The Combat Engine – The combat engine can scale up from sophisticated one-on-one encounters to one-on-many, where enemies employ intelligent squad-based dynamics, right up to combat against battalions pushing real-time gameplay and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to unprecedented new levels.
Physics-Based Combat – The physics-based combat allows players to sweep debris against opponents, kick tables to halt an oncoming surge of fighters, smash the enemy into the scenery, or throw bodies into other enemies using “aftertouch” controls.
Wide range of Objects & Weaponry – Heavenly Sword provides a wide range of objects & weaponry including rapid fire crossbows and massively damaging bazookas.
Creative in-game Cinematography – Coupled with real-time story evolvement and amazing set-pieces, Heavenly Sword feels like a blockbuster action movie that takes combat gameplay to new heights.
PLAYSTATION®3 – Greater processing power on the PS3 enables more immersive visuals and sound effects in Heavenly Sword, heightening the character performance and combat within the stunningly beautiful environments.
